A saliva hormone test measures bio-available hormone levels, that is, hormones that are actually being used by tissues.
Why measure hormone levels in saliva?
Measuring salivary levels of hormones is important because hormones pass through saliva gland tissues before entering the saliva. Thus, it is reflective of actual tissue hormone levels as compared to blood hormones which represent hormones that may eventually get to tissue.
Saliva collection is painless and easy to do at home, whereas blood hormone testing requires blood collection from a laboratory. Some hormones (such as estriol) cannot be tested in blood. Furthermore, with cortisol (a hormone released during stress), the stress of a needle puncture can falsely elevate blood cortisol levels.
Which hormones are tested?
The standard saliva hormone panel measures the following hormones:
Male Hormone Panel – Testosterone, DHEAS, Morning Cortisol & Estrogen.
As well, melatonin (the hormone for sleep-wake cycles) and cortisol (the stress hormone) levels can be measured.
How much does the saliva hormone test cost?
The standard saliva hormone test costs $255, with an approximately 2-3 week turnaround time for labs to be received by our office.
More comprehensive testing can also be requested with different pricing depending on your budget and requirements.
