Fatty Acid Profile
Measuring major fatty acids in red blood cells
Measuring major fatty acids in red blood cells
Having elevated levels of trans-fats can lead to increased LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and can increase risk of heart disease. Red blood cell membranes are used to measure the fatty acid content, since they provide much less variability than measuring serum or plasma levels.
This test measures the fatty acid content of red blood cells, including various important omega-3s, omega-6s and trans-fats.
This is a useful test for determining if you are taking inadequate omega-3s compared to your omega-6s, as the ratio will assist to determine potential for inflammation in your body.
Important fatty acids that are measured in this test include arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosohexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
If changes are implemented in terms of taking fish oils or decreasing trans-fat or saturated fat intake, the test can be repeated and used to monitor if changes to fatty acid profile have followed suit.
The cost for this lab test is $199.
