Thyroid conditions – especially Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism – are often overlooked. Many patients are told their TSH is “normal” while continuing to experience fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and brain fog. Thyroid dysfunction often overlaps with hormonal imbalances and chronic fatigue.
At Zentai Wellness Centre, Dr. Makoto Trotter, ND takes a comprehensive approach to Hashimoto’s and hypothyroid treatment in Toronto, looking beyond TSH alone. A full assessment may include thyroid antibodies, nutrient status, gut health (e.g. leaky gut and digestion), and hormonal patterns that influence thyroid function.
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Trotter works with patients who feel unwell despite “normal” lab results – helping identify what may be missing.
Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid, leading to reduced hormone production (hypothyroidism).
Hashimoto’s is one of the most common autoimmune conditions treated at our clinic. For an overview of how naturopathic medicine approaches autoimmune disease more broadly, see our naturopathic autoimmune support page.
It is often missed because standard testing may only include TSH, without measuring thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb) needed to confirm the autoimmune component.
Many patients are prescribed thyroid medication without understanding why the thyroid is underperforming. Identifying and addressing underlying triggers is a key part of care.
You may benefit from a thyroid assessment if you experience:
These symptoms often overlap with hormonal and digestive conditions, making a comprehensive evaluation important. Thyroid dysfunction is often missed when only TSH is tested.
Thyroid dysfunction and perimenopause share many symptoms and frequently co-exist in women in their 40s – both are assessed together at our clinic.
Conventional testing often stops at TSH. A more complete thyroid evaluation may include:
Comprehensive thyroid panel
TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies to assess hormone production and conversion.Thyroid dysfunction frequently co-exists with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome – both are assessed together at our clinic. Learn more about naturopathic blood sugar support.
Autoimmune markers
Elevated antibodies confirm Hashimoto’s and guide treatment beyond symptom management.
Nutrient testing
Key nutrients like selenium, zinc, iron, and vitamin D play a critical role in thyroid function.
Gut health assessment (including leaky gut and digestion)
Gut dysfunction may contribute to autoimmune activity and thyroid symptoms.
Hormonal context (including PCOS, PMS, PMDD and menopause)
Thyroid issues often overlap with adrenal and sex hormone imbalances. Additional testing (e.g. DUTCH Hormone Test Toronto) may be recommended.
Treatment is individualized based on your presentation and lab findings. Common approaches include:
Nutrition and diet
Anti-inflammatory, whole-food strategies are foundational. Targeted eliminations (e.g., gluten, dairy) may be explored in Hashimoto’s.
Targeted supplementation
Correcting deficiencies – especially selenium, zinc, iron, and vitamin D – can support thyroid function and reduce antibodies.
Herbal medicine
Botanical therapies may support immune balance, energy, and stress resilience.
Gut-focused protocols
Addressing gut health can be an important part of managing autoimmune thyroid conditions.
Acupuncture
Used to support energy, stress regulation, and overall endocrine balance.
Collaborative care
Naturopathic treatment works alongside conventional care. Thyroid medications are not discontinued without physician guidance.
This approach may be a good fit if:

Can I see a naturopath if I’m already on thyroid medication? Yes. Naturopathic care works alongside medication such as Synthroid or levothyroxine. Many patients find that addressing the root causes of their thyroid dysfunction – including nutrition, gut health, and immune triggers – leads to improved wellbeing and, in some cases, reduced medication requirements over time in consultation with their prescribing physician.
What’s the difference between hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s? Hypothyroidism describes an underactive thyroid — low thyroid hormone output. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition and the most common cause of hypothyroidism. Not all hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s, and identifying whether the autoimmune component is present matters significantly for treatment – it opens the door to addressing the immune dysregulation at the root of the condition, which medication alone does not do.
Do you offer thyroid testing at your Toronto clinic? Yes. We can requisition comprehensive thyroid panels through LifeLabs including TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb). We also review any existing bloodwork you’ve had done — many patients arrive having only had TSH tested, and a fuller picture often reveals patterns that were previously missed. Where relevant, the DUTCH hormone test may also be recommended.
How long does it take to see results? Most patients notice meaningful improvements in energy, mood, and mental clarity within 8–12 weeks of starting a targeted treatment plan. Thyroid antibody levels, when elevated, typically reduce over 3–6 months of consistent treatment. Dr. Trotter will give you a realistic timeline based on your specific presentation at your first visit.
If your symptoms don’t match your lab results, it may be time for a deeper look.
