Why measure hormone levels with saliva hormone testing?
Measuring salivary levels of hormones is important because hormones pass through saliva gland tissues before entering the saliva. Thus, a saliva hormone test is reflective of actual tissue hormone levels. In contrast, blood hormones represent hormones that may eventually get to tissue. As a results, saliva hormone testing provides much better guidance with respect to your hormone levels.
Saliva collection is painless and easy to do at home, whereas blood hormone testing requires blood collection from a laboratory. Some hormones (such as estriol) cannot be tested in blood. Furthermore, with cortisol (a hormone released during stress), the stress of a needle puncture can falsely elevate blood cortisol levels.
Which hormones are tested?
The standard saliva hormone panel measures the following hormones:
- Female Hormone Panel – Estrogen, Progesterone, DHEAS, Morning Cortisol & Testosterone.
- Male Hormone Panel – Testosterone, DHEAS, Morning Cortisol & Estrogen.
As well, we can measure melatonin (the hormone for sleep-wake cycles) and cortisol (the stress hormone) levels.

A standard saliva hormone test has an approx. 2-3 week turnaround time for labs to be received by our office.
Additionally, more comprehensive testing can also be requested with different pricing depending on your budget and requirements.
For example, there are options for measuring your stress hormone, cortisol, throughout the day. Cortisol fluctuates over the course of the day, meaning that it is more accurate to measure multiple points over a day’s time. Consequently, you can add up to four cortisol measurements to the standard saliva hormone test, if stress and adrenal function are in question.

Female Hormone Panel
For women, the Female Hormone Panel measures the hormones estradiol, progesterone, cortisol, DHEA-S, and testosterone.
